NaNoWriMo: The Musical

Geek Culture

For all the fearless people participating in NaNoWriMo, there is a musical dedicated to your endeavor. It is called NaNoWriMo: The Musical.

NaNoWriMo: The Musical is a six-part web series created by fans and long time participants of NaNoWriMo. Written by Errol Elumir and Manda Whitney of WE Tangent, it was created with the spirit of NaNoWriMo in mind. They wrote the script in one month. Shot the musical in another month. Then they edited it in another month. All without a budget.

NaNoWriMo: The Musical follows Dale, a legend who has surpassed the 50,000 word count every year, and his three friends as they navigate their way through the exciting and often tumultuous month of November. It includes music by geek music duo Debs and Errol. Of course, there is also singing.

The cast and crew includes:

  • Errol Elumir as Rick — who is a calmer version of Errol
  • Manda Whitney as Val
  • Luke LaRocque as Dale
  • Blythe Haynes as Jill
  • Directed by Kelsey Goldberg
  • Camera ops byBarbara-Audrey Bergero

You can find out more about the cast and crew on NaNoWriMo: The Musical‘s website.

According to Errol, the story of how NaNoWriMo: The Musical came to be goes a little something like this:

I have always wanted to do a musical. Back in July, Manpans and I were sitting in McDonalds discussing what our next project should be. I told her we should do the musical, and she said yes.

Manpans didn’t expect anything would happen because we needed a script, we needed to film it, and we needed to get it done before November. At best, she hoped the script and music would be done before November.

However, we booked shoot dates, brought in actors, brought on a director, a camera op, and before we could even think… September was done. The footage was filmed.

It was crazy insane.

And I am so excited, so proud, so pleased with the people involved. This is my first musical. This is the first time I’ve written a script longer than 10 minutes. This was an amazing process, and I hope you enjoy it.

So, when you are needing an excuse to procrastinate during the month of November, don’t forget to watch NaNoWriMo: The Musical.
