With Hurricane Sandy in the midst of doing her thing and threatening power outages across much of the north-eastern US and Canada, now might be the time to brush up on some basic power outage survival skills.

Depending on where you happen to live, the preparation part of this exercise might be a little too late, but there’s also advice that may come in handy should you live in an area where Hurricane Sandy knocks out power. Things like remembering to turn off your appliances to avoid stressing the grid (or potentially scaring the hell out of yourself) if the TV, stereo and every light in the house suddenly blast back to life at 3am, keeping the refrigerator closed and only using fuel-burning portable stoves outside of the house.
