GeekMom at Maker Faire

It was a wild and wonderful weekend for the GeekMoms at Maker Faire in New York!

The GeekMom/GeekDad booth at World Maker Faire New York last weekend welcomed a steady stream of families interested in all we have to offer, including simple robotics projects from Kathy Ceceri’s new activity book. You can watch a video of the talk she gave about “Low Tech/No Tech Robotics Projects for Kids” on Sunday at the Make Demo and Make: Live stages on Make’s Google Plus page.

Helene took some spectacular pictures of the event, too, just in case you missed it. Check out the bottom of the post to see the gallery!

Family

GeekMom was very excited to hear when Marissa Mayer was promoted to CEO of Yahoo while pregnant. We want to extend our continued support and congratulate her on the birth of her new baby boy!

Just because we’re the parents doesn’t mean we’re in sync with our kids. They are their own people with energy levels, interests, and ideas that may be radically different than ours. That’s why it’s refreshing to read this post about getting through what feels like a personality “mismatch.”

A few months ago we featured this cool dad and his daughters in photos, now here’s another!

Behold your brain screwing with you:

“Puke green” or “pea green”? Turns out men and women, on the whole, tend to look at colors very differently. All wrapped up in a handy-dandy infographic, too.

Food & Health

Wondering what all the GMO hoopla is about? Take a few minutes to learn about genetically modified organisms, why they’re in our food, and why – maybe – we should rethink that.

Go for the good cheese. You’ve earned it, but can you spot it? Learn more about good cheese and get free samples by checking out The American Cheese Revolution Tour. There are still a few stops left!

This year’s zombie walk is almost here, so it’s only fitting to bring last year’s walk back from the dead.

Entertainment

As J.K. Rowling releases her first novel for adults, isn’t it time to rethink what Harry Potter might be doing ten years later?

The Observer names top 100 books and they get a design makeover.

Star Wars Reads Day is almost here! Celebrate literacy with Star Wars giveaways, library events, and more at a galaxy near you this Saturday, October 6.

A Downton Abbey prequel? Vanity Fair says it’s possible.
