Have you heard about Disney’s newest star? She’s short with white hair and, no, it is not Betty White – she is Tinkerbell’s sister, Periwinkle. The sisters star in the newest Disney Fairies movie, Secret of the Wings, which is now available on home video.
I was allowed to see an early screening of Secret of the Wings and I must admit, I am surprised that it is a direct-to-video release. It has A-list voice actors including Timothy Dalton and Anjelica Huston, and it was produced by John Lasseter. Not to mention that it was written and directed by both Roberts “Bobs” Gannaway and Peggy Holmes. Gannaway has written and directed nearly every television cartoon series that Disney has created in the past seventeen years. Peggy Holmes, on the other hand, is a choreographer and has choreographed some of the most famous dance scenes in recent movie history. These include Newsies, Rock Star and geek favorite Wayne’s World. Her influence on this film is tremendous and it shows in the movement of the on screen characters, especially with the attention to detail.
In this fourth Disney Fairies movie, Tinkerbell travels to the Winter Woods which is off limits and harsh to fairy-kind. Of course she goes anyway and discovers [SPOILER ALERT] that she has a long lost sister named Periwinkle who has grew up as a winter fairy. Regular fairies cannot go in the winter, winter fairies cannot leave the winter – you see how this is a problem. Well, they find a way to all work together and overcome obstacles in their path to happiness. [END SPOILERS] I really am not going too deep into this plot line because it is a really enjoyable movie which kept both of my kids, daughter and son, entranced for the duration. If your kids have ever enjoyed Tinkerbell’s previous escapades, then they will probably love this one.
I do believe in fairies, I do, I do!
Another great thing about the introduction of this new story to the Tinkerbell mythology is that Periwinkle is here to stay. In fact, they already have areas carved out for her at the Disney theme parks and her own full time characters walking around. The new Periwinkle and Tinkerbell both have been outfitted with glowing wings, which is significant in the Secret of the Wings movie. She is going to be a huge addition to the parks.
