Ah, how time flies! When you go to a science fiction convention, it seems as though it might have just been yesterday when Return of the Jedi created the most iconic bikini costume of all time. And then you realize that the woman who as Princess Leia inhabited said bikini is turning 56 years old.

In the intervening years since she last fought the Empire, Carrie Fisher — who was indeed born on this day in 1956 — has proved herself to be far more than just the only female character with more than a few minutes’ screen time in the original Star Wars trilogy. In addition to acting in over 70 other movies and TV shows, Fisher has written four novels, one autobiography, two stage plays, and several screenplays — in addition to acting as script doctor for a few other screenplays.

Fisher, who was born into Hollywood as the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and actor Eddie Fisher (who shortly after her birth left her mother for Elizabeth Taylor), has struggled with substance abuse and other personal problems for much of her life. From all accounts, however, she has fortunately managed to get her life under control in the past decade or so.

Please join all of us at GeekDad in wishing Carrie Fisher a very happy 56th birthday, and many more to come!
