Exclusive Peek Inside Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years

Geek Culture

Star Trek fans will want to mark Stardate -310076.5027006173 — December 4, 2012 — on their calendars. That is the release date for Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years, a book that goes where no book has gone before.

Written by historian David A. Goodman as part of a special exhibit on Memory Alpha to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the United Federation of Planets, Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years is a historical account that chronicles the eras beginning with the birth of Zefram Cochrane and ending with the death of Captain James T. Kirk.

Included in this historic volume, commissioned by the Council of the United Federation of Planets, are many wonderful illustrations, official documents, letters, personal logs and official logs, and more. This historic volume also comes housed in a lighted pedestal, with an audio message from Admiral Hikaru Sulu.

In preparation for the release of Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years, the Council of the United Federation of Planets has designated me as a delegate charged with presenting exclusive materials extracted from this volume that will be housed on Memory Alpha.

The first of these is a look at three of the images found within Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years.

The Vulcan philosopher Surak grew up in a world plagued by war and on the edge of self-destruction. As a young man, he fought in those wars in the infantry; he attributed much of his later philosophy to the changes he underwent during this ordeal. In this section from the original first draft manuscript of his teachings, Surak relays his experience in escaping from captivity into the Forge, an area of Vulcan decimated by nuclear war. This was the beginning of this pilgrimage; his experience there would shape his attitudes toward emotions. / TM®&©2012 by CBS Studios Inc. © 2012 Paramount Pictures Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
