While many geeks likely spend more time tweaking their avatars than contemplating their real world wardrobes, there are those among us who have a genuine interest in fashion. And though my workday garb often consists of chinos and polos – not to mention the traditional jeans-and-t-shirt nerd uniform I rock away from the office – there are times when a man needs a more formal ensemble.
When I first encountered Indochino’s Superhero Collection, I was thrilled. The designs themselves capture the dual nature of the comic book crime-fighter with strong, dark exterior colors masking vibrant linings. Further, the Indochino online purchase interface allows buyers to customize practically every facet of an order and even offers helpful hints to those unsure whether or not pleated pants are in. (Pro-tip: they most certainly are not.)
Last month I talked about my experience browsing and ordering from Indochino. I praised their deep customization options and the step-by-step guide that makes even the harrowing experience of taking one’s measurements wholly effortless, but, as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, I knew all this digital magic didn’t matter as much as my experience with the finished physical product.

I’ll cut to the chase and say that my Indochino suit – I chose the Superhero Light Grey Pinstripe – certainly lived up to my expectations. Its sturdy construction mirrors its exquisite design, and the two collide in defining aspects like the striking contrast stitching. As promised, both the jacket and pants were tailored to my measurements, and I was so pleased with the look and level of comfort that I recently went back to pick up the optional vest.
My only area of disappointment was the much-touted themed magnetic lapel pin, an iconic add-on that coordinates with the specialty liner fabric. Though discreet and perfectly colored, the pin appeared little more than three fat pieces of felt hot-glued to a magnet. Still, this simple makeup and the fact that the lapel itself also contains a similar magnet mean that there’s nothing to stop me (or an aspiring Etsy crafter) from kicking off a cottage industry of specially designed magnetic pins.
Aside from this very minor gripe, the only real barrier to purchase is the geek’s own penchant for selective thrift. Dropping $500 on an iPad is a no-brainer, but on a suit?! Those with this mindset, or anyone looking to save a little scratch on a purchase, are encouraged to seek out Indochino on Twitter, where information concerning special events and otherwise unadvertised sales abounds.
Indochino’s Traveling Tailor at Union Station’s Grand Hall
Those in the Bay Area should pay special attention to this month’s San Francisco stop of the Indochino Traveling Tailor. This “pop-up store” will be located at 710 Market Street daily September 18th to 23rd, and stylists will be on hand taking measurements and affording interested patrons the opportunity to peruse the latest collections in person. It’s an interesting twist on Indochino’s traditionally electronic-only brand of customer service that’s already played well to those that attended the debut event in Chicago.
Indochino is a different kind of clothier. The company places an obvious emphasis on crafting quality custom products, but it does so without overwhelming the novice consumer. Similarly, the Superhero Collection represents a different kind of suit line – one that’s fashion-forward but still provides a subtle nod to the comic book guy within us all.
