I know football or other sports isn’t often thought of as a geeky pursuit but I’ve been fascinated by the X’s and O’s for as long as I’ve been reading comic books. I come by the fascination naturally as neither parent was particularly interested in the NFL. Others might see a violent game, and it is, but I see it more as a chess match of increasingly complicated one-upmanshp as the offense makes adjustment, then the defense counters, and vice versa.
That’s likely why Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots is my favorite coach because he’s one of the most cerebral in the game and he tends to think outside the box. For instance, his widely criticized decision to go for it on fourth and two in a 2009 game with the Indianapolis Colts. He was no doubt relying on a statistical study that said the odds were with him.
My youngest son, who also likes chess, watches the games with me on Sunday, so now it’s become a family activity instead of a solitary pursuit.
