Search [“To Anacreon in Heaven”] to learn that this was a British song used by Francis Key Scott to accompany his poem “Defense of Fort McHenry.” Written in 1814, it was later retitled “The Star Spangled Banner.” Search [U.S. flag 1814] to discover that the flag had 15 stars and 15 stripes as Key saw it flying over Fort McHenry on the morning of September 14, 1814.
