As a long time comic fan who has followed the tragedy last week in Aurora, Colorado with a heavy heart, I’ve avoided writing about it until now. There seems to be very little I could say to add light or comfort in the face of something so horrific, other than to say all of my thoughts and comfort go to the victims, though I know with the pain so fresh, that likely means very little to those suffering.
But Batgirl writer Gail Simone posted her thoughts on the heroes of the Aurora tragedy and they are well worth reading.
“We have been seeing stories of impossible heroism that occurred that night in that theater. Jarrell Brooks, just nineteen years old, had an exit out of the theater, and went back in to help a young mother and her two daughters get out, getting wounded in the process.”
She claimed to have been at a loss for words but the full post is one of the most eloquent I’ve read. If you’re at a loss because you wonder why such horrible things can happen in this world, read her full post and remember that even in tragedy, there are still heroes. And remember those heroes, above all, and not the one who inflicted the pain.
