Assassin’s Creed III Takes to the High Seas

Geek Culture

For one reason and another I lost track with Assassin’s Creed. I caught up with Hughes Ricour, Senior Producer on Assassin’s Creed III to find out more about the upcoming third major outing for the franchise.

He talked me through the highlights of the new game, not least the new hero, location and addition of the impressive sea battles. More than this, he also draws back the curtain on the ethic and philosophy behind the Assassin’s Creed games.

Assassin’s Creed III has always taken history to be a playground and, as Ricour puts it, aims to explore the “grey areas.” He discusses how they worked with historians and the Mohawk tribes to make sure the background was right, and modeled Boston and New York on 18th century maps.

As the game has become so broad we ask him what remains key to Assassin’s Creed. Ricour pointed to navigating through the landscape and city crowds. Being able to create your own paths through these environments is a central pillar. He also talked about the combat, being able to use stealth or direct fights. Finally, Ricour talked about how they handle right and wrong in the context of history.

I came away from the conversation enthused about the new game, looking forward to investigating the world it creates — in particular taking to the high seas.

Assassin’s Creed III will be available on October 30th from Amazon for $58.99.
