There are a lot more Emmy awards that many of us realize. There are the Primetime Emmys, the ones that we usually see on the Emmy broadcast we all grew up with, celebrating the creators and actors on the shows we watch in Primetime. There are local Emmys (where your local new station gets awards, for example). And then, there are the Creative Arts Emmys.
The Creative Arts Emmys are like the technical Oscars we always see presented by some actress to a room of geeky engineers in a short segment of the telecast, telegraphing “here are the people who do the really geeky stuff that the artists don’t understand, but which makes all the cool stuff possible.” The Creative Arts Emmy’s celebrate “…technical and other similar achievements in American television programming. They are commonly awarded to behind-the-scenes personnel such as art directors, costume designers, cinematographers, casting directors, and sound editors.” (per Wikipedia)
So, did you know there is a Best Voiceover Performance Emmy?
It’s been going since 1992, and honestly the winners to date can pretty much be summed up as everyone from The Simpsons, plus Seth McFarlane. Okay, yes, Christopher Plummer got it, and Anne Hathaway (for a Simpsons episode), and Keith David (but not for Batman). But in almost 20 years, 14 winners have been for Simpsons episodes. I’m not begrudging them their fine work, just putting things in context.
This year, the nominees include Hank Azaria (The Simpsons), Maurice LaMarche (Futurama – also, voice of The Brain!), Rob Riggle, Brenda Strong, and Kristen Wiig. But one newcomer stands out for us at GeekDad: Dan Povenmire, co-creator of Phineas and Ferb, and the voice of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, our favorite bumbling mad scientist and caring single dad.
We geeks love the voiceover artists for bringing life to the animated characters we so love, and we’re really proud that Dan is up for his awesome work on P&F. Dr. Doof is the voice that every dad loves to mimic (“what, I’ve got the legs for it!”), and we know he loves his daughter immensely, even if his geeky tendencies sometimes get in the way of his expressing it. So here’s rooting for Dan!
The Creative Arts Emmys will be awarded on September 15th.
