Portland, Oregon, is truly a geek Mecca. From the bicycles, supernatural creatures, wicked good humor, the food, the Church of Elvis (that is cooch street not cowch street) and the greatest used bookstore on the planet Portland (that is Or-i-gun not Or-ee-gone) speaks geek. Just in case those weren’t enough to get you to visit in the next month then add to your list the following:

The Northwest Film Center is hosting screenings all month of Studio Ghibli films. Miyazaki favorites from Castle in the Sky to Howl’s Moving Castle are on the docket. However, I am most excited to see some of Studio Ghibli’s lesser known films on the list including, Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, Pom Poko, and one of my personal favorites, A Whisper of the Heart.

Dads, this is a great opportunity to take your children — especially daughters — to see some of the greatest family films ever made! (You can read more on why I think these films are so great for kids here.) If you are in the area, don’t miss out. The festival starts today with screenings of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind this weekend. You can find the complete schedule on the NW Film Center website. I will look forward to seeing you there.
