They’re diverse. They’re proud. They’re misunderstood. They’re Bronies.
At the end of June 2012, thousands of fans of the animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic will gather at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, New Jersey for BronyCon. During BronyCon, a documentary will be filmed. The purpose of this documentary is to help shine some light on and celebrate this phenomena known as Bronies.
But why? What does it matter what other’s think of Bronies? Why tell their story? GeekMom Rebecca Angel highlighted some of the reasons behind the need for such a documentary. John de Lancie — the voice of Discord in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and who played Q in Star Trek: The Next Generation — has more to say:
With just over a week and a half remaining in this Kickstarter campaign, the original goal has been met and exceeded. However, they are now trying to reach a new goal. They now want to raise $200, 000. This will allow them to go into the homes of those who are being featured in this documentary:
We are also announcing a new funding push. The response to our casting call was overwhelming. There are so many amazing and inspiring stories out there. We can’t tell them all, but with your help we can include lots of them. As you may know we started out as a documentary essentially covering a convention, which is taking place over a few days, but we want to do more. We want to take viewers into the homes of the amazing people who identify as Bronies. This costs money. We have to pay for travel and hotels, crew members and equipment rentals.
As with any Kickstarter campaign, there are many wonderful perks, including signed limited edition artwork. Aside from the Kickstarter page, they’ve set up another website for people who, like me, can only contribute via PayPal.
I, for one, am looking forward to viewing this documentary.
