I make a habit of visiting science museums wherever I travel. I’ve been to the Museum of Science in Boston several times, I’ve visited the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. and aquariums in Atlanta, Boston, and Mystic, Connecticut.
But so far I’ve missed out on The Field Museum in Chicago. I may have to change that because an exhibit is opening on May 26th that is exactly in line with my interest in extinct and unusual animals:
Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time.

Aside from the indricotherium, pictured above, the exhibit contains fleshed-out models of an extinct walking whale, a newly discovered extinct walking seal, and one of the oldest fossilized bats ever found, among many others in the exhibit. There are also comparisons of these long-ago mammals to human and other creatures living today.
The Field Museum is open 9-5 every day of the year, except Christmas. Extreme Mammals will run from May 26 of this year to January 6, 2013.
