Yuri's Night 2012: Make an Impact!

Thursday (April 12) marks the 51st anniversary of the first manned flight into space, when Yuri Gagarin — aboard his Vostok 1 capsule — journeyed where no human had gone before. As we have done for the last 11 years, members of Yuri’s Night are organizing parties in all corners of our home planet to commemorate the occasion. Parties vary in size from a few dozen to a few hundred people, all started by individuals who view human space exploration as something to honor, celebrate, and rejoice.

For 2012, Yuri’s Night already has 170 parties registered in 42 countries. There may be more parties added this week, but it’s likely that wherever you live, you can find a Yuri’s Night party near you using the list provided on their Web site. And if you can’t find a party close by, it’s never too late to organize and register your own Yuri’s Night party.

I’ll be celebrating at the Science Club in Washington, DC, where I was for the 50th anniversary party last year. This is an incredible venue — a converted brownstone in the heart of the U.S. Capital with a decidedly steampunk flair to its decor. I’m hoping to sample some of the great sci-fi themed drinks they provided last year including a Sonic Screwdriver and Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Yummy!

However you choose to celebrate Yuri’s Night — whether at a public event or in the privacy of your own home — I hope you celebrate it in the company of like minded comrades.
