I Think We Can Make It: Surviving the Next 100,000 Years

Assuming of course that the Mayans had simply meant to pop out to their local Barnes & Noble to pick up a new calendar when theirs was set to run out later this year, humanity has a pretty good chance of surviving the next 100,000 and probably the next million years or so. This is based on the law of averages, according to New Scientist Magazine, on how long mammalian species endure on our little rock floating in space:

Of course, that’s not to say we won’t face any challenges. We can expect threats we’ve encountered before, like colossal volcanic eruptions and pandemic bugs, as well as new ones like out-of-control technology.

But, as bad as all of those are, none are guaranteed to wipe humanity from the globe. So, don’t worry, be happy! There’ll be at least another 1,250 generations of GeekDads to come. Raising Geek Generation 352.0?
