Protect Your Kindle Fire With the Speck FitFolio

I was an early adopter of Amazon’s Kindle Fire, and, try as I might, I still don’t love the device. I mean, I like it. I like it a lot. I’m happy I bought it and it certainly lived up to my (reasonable) expectations, but between its overall sluggishness and the occasional clunkiness of the UI it often makes me want to crossbreed the diminutive Fire with the noticeably sleeker iPad.

Still, just like pets and firearms, you must both protect and respect your tablet, and as the guy who admittedly has a weird thing for device cases this takes on a special dimension for me. I purchased the Marware MicroShell folio-style cover at launch, and aside from a minor gripe about price I’ve had no real complaints.

The new Speck FitFolio case, however, provides all the functionality of the MicroShell with some added sturdiness. With a similar snap-in design, folio front cover and multiple-position stand, the main differences boil down to materials and construction. Rather than the Marware’s rubberized exterior, the Speck case instead uses a thick faux leather cover that’s both easy to grip and simple to fold (along a specially constructed seam) for use in the standing position. Likewise, rather than a large elastic strap, the front cover secures easily to the clip-in case with a single small bungee loop that fastens around a plastic tab to keep the screen safe from scratch damage in a backpack or purse.

The price, like the construction, is close enough to be comparable, but the Speck FitFolio lists for around $5 cheaper than the MicroShell and likely wins out with regard to genuine protection of the device. With a tablet as ultra-portable as the Kindle Fire, a proper cover is pretty much a necessity, and once again Speck has provided a solid product at a reasonable price.
