Last week marked a day that perhaps only hardcore fans of the infamous character may know or care about; March 23 was the birthday of one Diana Prince – also known as Wonder Woman.
GeekMom editor and GeekDad contributor Corrina Lawson posted an article on that day that expresses her displeasure about the recent turns that DC Comics has taken with our beloved Amazonian princess. I have to admit that I agree with Corrina whole-heartedly; it seems that the Wonder Woman I have known and adored my entire life is being turned into something that I wouldn’t want my own nieces to admire. From here on in, I would like to remind DC Comics, and anyone who may have forgotten, what made Wonder Woman so famous and well-loved by many when she was introduced as the first female superhero in the 1940′s.
Many may not know is that Wonder Woman was co-created by William Moulton Marston and his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston; Mr. Marston was vital in the advancement of the polygraph -– or lie detector -– which may be why the character has a Lasso of Truth in her private arsenal. Marston believed that the world should be run as a matriarchy instead of being dominated by men, and many believe that this view was the basis for Paradise Island, Wonder Woman’s home.
