The Make-A-Wish Foundation does some amazing things for kids who are facing challenges that kids just shouldn’t have to face. Whether it’s a trip to Disney World or the chance to be a police officer for a day, the group helps kids make their dreams come true and refocus for a moment.
Recently, working with Little Mountain Productions, Make-A-Wish delivered a drivable R2-D2 to Matthew Grammer in Oklahoma. The oversized astromech is operated with a simple joystick and has huge on and off buttons inside. (There’s also a switch to cut power on the outside for the parents.) This Artoo unit even has a cushioned seat for Matthew to sit on when driving about – somewhere, Kenny Baker is very jealous.
Matthew is being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which he was diagnosed with in 2009. He has been responding well to treatment and his family hopes his last chemotherapy treatment will be completed next month.
Little Mountain Productions is no stranger to Make-A-Wish involvement. You may recall their Millennium Falcon backyard club house that was presented to another Oklahoma boy in 2010. Still, they may have outdone themselves with this drivable R2-D2 and one thing’s for sure — Matthew’s going to win this year’s Halloween costume contest.
