Davy Jones at the beginning of Daydream Believer

Today, actor and musician, Davy Jones died at the age of 66, suffering from a heart attack. For many geeks of my generation and the generation before mine, this is sad news.

Davy Jones is best known for being a member of The Monkees, the zany musical group created for the television show of the same name. For me, the greatest appeal of this show was because The Monkees were quirky. They were misfits who dressed in ridiculous costumes, got mixed up in crazy shenanigans, and they were just a bit odd. Being an odd child who didn’t quite fit anywhere, it was fun to follow this group on their silly adventures.

And of course, there was dreamy Mr Jones. For many, he was their first Brit-crush. His adorable smile and beautiful brown eyes, all bundled up in a tiny package made him rather appealing. He also wasn’t bad on the ears, both when he sang and when he spoke. For the North American audience, his accent also added to his appeal. Yes, Mr Jones was one of the original teenage heartthrobs. And for many, he was also the physical embodiment our inner child.

The Monkees was not the only television show to feature his wide appeal. Some of the guest appearances he is best known for are The Brady Bunch, and when he appeared and sang, in animated form, in Scooby-Doo. More recently, he appeared as himself in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, serenading Sabrina with what has become THE Davy Jones song: Daydream Believer:

Davy Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica, and his four daughters from previous relationships.

What did you like the most about Davy Jones? Why did he appeal to you? What will you miss about him?
