Wizards of the Coast announced on Thursday that they will be releasing a limited-edition reprint of the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) core rulebooks: the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. Each of the books will be a faithful reprint of the original content and art, but receive a new cover design. Best yet, a portion of the proceeds – though there’s no exact details here – will go to supporting the Gygax Memorial Fund which is raising money to commission a memorial statue of E. Gary Gygax to stand in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Unfortunately the premium reprints come at a premium price: MSRP is $34.95 for the PHB and MM, and $44.95 for the DMG. That’s in line with other hard cover books released by Wizards recently, although one needs to keep in mind that these books are will have black & white interiors versus the usual full-color books that WotC sells. Thus, if you’re looking for a cheap way to simply play AD&D, Ebay is probably a much cheaper route since copies of the original books typically go for under $20 each. On the other hand, if you are a collector of all things D&D or want to get a classic RPG while helping out the Gygax memorial fund, this is just the ticket. The books are slated for an April 2012 release date.
