Mathare is collection of slum areas in Nairobi, Kenya. The population includes hundreds of thousands of children. Although pollution, poverty, disease, and crime are ever-present, hope lives there too.
The way out for children is education. A foundation started by former slum-dweller Julius Mwelu is giving children the opportunity to express themselves through photos and videos. The Mwelu Foundation teaches young people about photography, film production, journalism. It also helps them look at themselves and their community through a wider lens.
Their photos and videos reveal personal and compelling stories. A book about Mwelu and the foundation is due out this month. A better future for the children of Mathare is also due soon.
Hi Laura,
Thanks for linking to our website, NSSPT.org. We are a Belfast and Jersey based charity that runs a school in the middle of Mathare. I had not heard of this foundation but will look into it now.
Kind regards,
Phil
