Lists are great. They provide an simple way to impart knowledge and facts in a simple layout that can be scanned through and dipped in and out of quickly. We’ve been known to run the odd one or two here on GeekDad.

And of course, the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to look back at what happened in the previous one. The BBC News site runs a blog called Magazine Monitor which has a weekly feature picking out “10 things we didn’t know last week,” culled from the websites of newspapers and magazines, and they’ve just collected their 100 favorite ones into an almanac of 2011.

So if you want to know what is the most valuable record of all time or how many beret factories remain in France, head over to the list and fill your brain with potentially useful — but probably not — trivia.

Happy New Year!
