Local Boy Makes Good: The Tardis Makes a Stop in my Hometown

A new playground opened this month at my old Infants school in England–the school I attended from the ages of 5-8. This is the place where I pinched a boy’s Adam’s apple and twisted it because he annoyed me and it’s the place where I played with my first sand table.  It’s where I learned to read and it’s where I learned the words to “Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead!” It also happens to be just a few hundred yards from my parents’ house … very convenient.

I wish I could have been at the dedication. Not because of any love I feel for my alma mater (which I have), and not because I have high praise for the design of the new built-from-scrap playground (which I also have), but because a local boy who has become a famous actor came back home to play with the kids and help open the playground. I love it when people do that.

Talking to local press, Arthur Darvill, who plays Rory Williams in Doctor Who (insert squeal here), described the new playground as rather like the TARDIS:

“It’s simple-looking from the outside, but a world of magic and wonder within.”
