Go to Google Patents and search [patent 135,245] to find “Improvement in Brewing Beer and Ale Pasteurization,” by Louis Pasteur in 1873. Add 13 years to 1873 to get 1886. Search [pasteurization beverage 1886] to learn that in 1886, pasteurization was suggested by Franz von Soxhlet as a way to extend the shelf life of milk.
