Having lived in several different states, I’ve heard many different philosophies when it comes to tattoos. A young friend of mine from Missouri once described to me a person who had many tattoos, and said, “You know…like a bad guy!”
I had to chuckle to myself, as we were sitting around the fire pit behind my house in New York and most of the people I knew in New York – young, old, rich, poor, liberal, conservative – had a tattoo somewhere on their body. Neighborhoods and cultures differ, depending on where you happen to reside.
But I think most of us here on GeekMom can agree that this recent slide show of science related tattoos are nothing, if not awesome. Forget the token butterfly or skull and crossbones. These are tattoos worth paying attention to. It makes me wonder what amazing picture (or concept) I’d choose to carry around on my body, once I got brave enough to go under the knife.
GeekDad did a post, a few years ago, about many of the places you can find science related, geeky (and awesome!) tattoo ideas. With a recent slideshow, offered by The New York Times, I thought maybe it was time to revisit this seldom discussed aspect of living a creative life.

I don’t have one YET but when I finally get my degree I am getting one related to my degree. I am working on my degree in Space Studies, so I was thinking a launching Space Shuttle or Saturn V.

And yes, I love Lego bricks that much. Have 30+ years of them in my stash at home, including all the parts and instructions for the famed Galaxy Explorer. And now my kids love them too. 🙂

Also not science-y: my husband loves Boba Fett and Thor. He’s contemplating Thor’s hammer and Boba Fett’s insignia – of course, in the correct places they would be found on the armor. 🙂

Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding. Today in Odd Stuff Magazine we are presenting pictures of tattoos which have some element of science involved in it.

I don’t think I’ll ever have the…guts? commitment? to get something so permanent on my body, but one of the geekier things I’ve done was design a LOTR-inspired tattoo for my best friend. It had the winding elvish leaf scrolls and the Sindarin words for love and hope in tengwar. Sometimes I’m still floored that something I designed is permanently etched onto someone else’s body, but I wouldn’t have it be anything else.
