If you haven’t been following the Dragon Age: Redemption web series, you owe it to yourself to watch it now. The videogame tie-in series, written by and starring the always-excellent Felicia Day, wraps up Tuesday. You’ll enjoy it if you’re even slightly interested in role-playing videogames, and probably even if you aren’t.

The series features an elven assassin named Tallis, played by Day, who is on a quest to take down a rogue mage who has been wreaking havoc and generally doing evil things.

Tallis is not your typical fantasy protagonist — she’s headstrong and more than a bit sarcastic — and that in itself is enough of a twist to keep the series interesting. But there’s also a strong supporting cast — mostly in the group of diverse characters Tallis meets up with on her journey who become her adventure party.

The special effects are spare, but used to good effect, and in fine fantasy-video-RPG tradition there are plenty of blood spurts, but nothing more gory than that.

In fact, the series’ adherence to fantasy-video-RPG visuals is one of the things that makes Dragon Age: Redemption a pleasure to watch. The fight scenes are all meticulously choreographed, but if you’re looking for realism you’ll be disappointed — they’re made to look like the fight scenes in the Dragon Age games. If you’ve played the games, you’ll recognize many of the moves the characters make, and they all go toward making the series seem like a videogame brought to life.

The series finale, which premieres Tuesday and can be watched below, sees Tallis and crew confront the mage, and the sequence is everything you could hope for. Without giving much away, you’ll see love, betrayal, sacrifice and special effects a cut above what you’d expect from a web series — and all in the space of 13 minutes. It’s a very satisfying conclusion to the series, though — as a good story should — it leaves the viewer wanting to know what happens next to the characters. There’s always the chance for a sequel, right?

I had the great pleasure of interviewing Day yesterday, mostly about Dragon Age: Redemption, but we also spent some time talking about The Guild, Eureka, the announced sequel to Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and her current favorite videogames. She was a great interviewee, and you don’t have to take my word for it. We’ve put the audio from the interview up on the GeekDads podcast feed.
