Run, Zombies, Run!

Zombie runZombie runYou know you should be getting more exercise, but you just can’t motivate yourself to run. Well, thankfully there are some zombies who are happy to help you out.

The Zombie Apocalypse Run will be held the Saturday before Halloween at Lee Farms in Tualatin, Oregon (a bit south of Portland). Basically, here’s how it works: you show up either as a zombie or a survivor. Survivors will get a belt with some flags on it that represent your lifeline … and a 2 minute head start. Zombies race after the survivors and try to grab as many flags as they can.

The first survivor over the finish line with at least one flag wins that category, and the first zombie to cross with at least one flag in hand wins. There’s also a “King/Queen of the Living Dead” award for the zombie with the most flags.

Participants are encouraged to show up in costume (there’s a contest, natch), and there’s also a costume contest and shorter run for the kids. They’ll also have fog machines, creepy music, and eerie lighting to set the mood. Plus, this is an evening run in Portland in October. Chances are it’ll be rainy, or at least very muddy — perfect weather for hunting brains. Er, I mean, running from zombies.

I’m torn — I’ve also been invited to a Halloween game night, where there will be lots of zombie-related (and other appropriately-themed) board games, but I’ve never done a themed run like this either. Sounds like a lot of fun, and similar to other fun fitness ideas like ZombieFit. Plus I know I can run a 5k, even though it’s been some time since I’ve been running regularly.

If I do end up doing the run, I’ll certainly let you know how it went. Meanwhile, if you’ve ever done a run like this, share your experiences in the comments!
