GeekDad Puzzle of the Week Solution: An Hour in a Weekday Evening

Geek Culture

In his answer to this week’s puzzle about multitasking through a family evening, Adam pointed out that time flies like an arrow, and that fruit flies like a banana. So true, Adam. So true.

Mark wondered how much would it cost just to move, thus avoiding the hassle of cleaning. In fact, just tonight my wife asked if we might accomplish similar by burning the summer clothes our youngest has grown out of, rather than washing them.

Earl points out that with tasks accomplished in 59 minutes, the extra minute could be spent drinking a second beer. “If it takes two minutes to drink one while multitasking, it stands to reason you can finish it in one minute if you devote your full attention to it,” Earl writes. That’s what we here at GeekDad call optimization.

Most entries point out that I should have referred to the kids as “Thing one and thing two.”

Here, from Kostub, is what I thought was a nice way to represent a possible answer:

Task 1 | Task 2
15 – Cook dinner | 9 — Read Shouts & Murmurs
| 6 — General cleaning
10 — Shovel food into child | 10 — Shovel food into child
7 — Eat dinner | 7 — Packing school lunches
10 — Do dishes | 5 — Wrangle kids into tub
2 — Drink one nightly beer | 7 — Kids in tub
4 — Fretting about old dog | 5 — Fretting about money
8 — Aimless fretting | 5 — Fretting about work
3 — Conversation with wife | 5 — Surfing GeekDad

But the winning answer, randomly chosen from this week’s many correct entries, goes to an entrant named Erica, whom my intuition tells me is very unlikely a geek dad, per se. Congrats, Erica, on geek-momming your way to this week’s $50.00 ThinkGeek gift certificate. Here’s how Erica wrote her answer:

Erica's winning answer, which you probably can't actually see unless your eyes are much better than mine
