If your teen is anything like mine, she’s been counting the days until the release of the Hunger Games movie next March. Heck, if you’re anything like me, you’ve been counting! We got our first peek at the film in a short trailer that aired at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday night.
What did you think? It’s a brief tease, all right…there’s a hunted, haunted-looking Katniss running through the woods, dodging flaming tree limbs. We hear Gale on the voiceover: “They just want a good show, that’s all they want. You know how to hunt. Show ’em how good you are.” I love the wicked hiss of Katniss’s arrow as she releases her bowstring in the trailer’s final seconds. The trailer conveys her isolation and fear, but I found something jarring in Gale’s instructions; I’d have liked to hear Katniss’s voice. She’s the one telling the story, after all.
No glimpses, yet, of Katniss’s competition in the Games, nor of the spectacle outside the Arena. We’ll be living in suspense, these next few months…
I’m the one counting the days in my house. I think they’ve got the look of it right, so the movie looks promising.
Ooo, that gave me shivers.
The part that really got me was the “May the odds be ever in your favor.” Something about how it has so much meaning if you’ve READ the books, but just sounds like a tantalizing enough teaser line if you haven’t, and it made me think of all the people who don’t know what they’re in for and are going to discover it and I got SO EXCITED for them!
So true! It’s going to be great fun to watch the general public encounter the books through the movie.
Last summer my family was on a cross-country road trip when Mockingjay’s release date rolled around. We’d preordered a copy and knew it was waiting for us back home–five states and a week away. I ponied up for a second copy, this one digital, and downloaded it to my iPod Touch. My then-15yo daughter was so excited, you’d have thought I’d given her a car. 🙂
I’d say they used Gale’s voice to reassure anyone who hadn’t read the books that there *was* a male character in there – because after all an action movie isn’t a proper good action movie without a male hero of some degree.

My favorite part is Rue’s 4 note song/call at the very end. I love that you can download it in iTunes. Cool and haunting.
I am very excited for this movie. I need to reread the books. Was a little concerned with Gale’s voice over because I got a little bit of the impression that he may not be a good actor. Didn’t really sound sincere or something.
