Sean Maher Announces He is Gay

Sean Maher, best known as his role as Simon Tam in Firefly and Serenity, announced today that he is gay. Due in part from encouragement from his agent, he remained in the closet for years in fear for his career. With the support of his family, including his partner Paul and their two young children, he was able to find the courage to come out.

I had the honor of being able to meet Sean Maher at Dragon*Con last year. He was a very sweet guy and I wish him all the best as a result of not having to hide who he really is anymore.

He is currently starring in the new TV show The Playboy Club and you can read more about this story here.

  1. I’m surprised that his agent would advise that. Gay men are doing great in tv today, look at NPH. Heck he plays a womanizer, lol

  2. He probably started back over 10 years ago (it’s been 9 years since Firefly was on the air so at least that long) and things were a little different back then.

It’s sad all the same that he had to worry about picking his career over who he really was.

  3. The sound you just heard is an internet full of Firefly slash fans screaming. %-)

On a more serious note, I’m glad the world is becoming more accepting of people living the truth about themselves, and that more people feel they can share the truth.

  4. Well look at those pretty pretty eyes, It’s no big surprise when the really good looking guys come out. I don’t mind because I still day dream about them, and that is fine with me.

  5. When I first saw this yesterday, my immediate reaction was, “What, he wasn’t out already?” Eh, yeah, somehow I always assumed (even though I will admit to having had romantic dreams about him. I’m just saying. YOU ALL HAVE, ADMIT IT). And then as I’ve been thinking about it, it worries me more… you start to take for granted, we’ve come so far being accepting, you start to assume nobody needs to be hiding anymore, particularly in liberal-ol’ Hollywood, and then it turns out they still are. So, glad he really is out this time. Now I don’t need to worry about accidentally outing him through my own loose talk, apparently….
