GeekDad Review: The Steelseries Sensei Pro Laser Mouse

Electronics

A mouse is a mouse, right? You use it to click on different parts of the screen; to click and drag or maybe line up a headshot. Well, as most serious computer gamers will tell you, not all mice are created equal. For my everyday use, I use a wireless Logitech that came with my keyboard. Recently, I took advantage of Steam’s free Portal download. This is a great game, but I noticed that my system – which has overkill in the requirements department – was sluggish when I needed to move. Anyone who has ever played Portal knows that you cannot be sluggish in that game, at least at higher levels.

Come to find out, it was not my video card driver or low resources, it was my mouse. My wireless mouse could not communicate with the precise timing that is needed. Easy fix, I just needed to get a corded mouse. I decided to go big time and get a gaming mouse. I picked up the Steelseries Sensei Pro Grade Laser Mouse. I had previously had such good luck with their Spectrum Xbox 360/PC headphones, so how could I go wrong? I like this mouse so much, I am going to tell you about it.

The Sensei mouse features three fully customizable illuminated areas on the mice and seven buttons (including the scroll wheel). It also features a state of the art laser sensor that offers a consistent and reliable performance. The SteelSeries Sensei boasts 10.8 megapixel HD image correlation at up to 12,000 frames per second and the ability to handle tracking movements of up to 150 inches per second. I do not know how that stacks up with other laser mice, but I know this mouse is precise.

Moreover, this mouse has its own processor! The processor in SteelSeries Sensei is a 32 bit ARM processor and it is as fast as the original Pentium 75 MHz processor released by Intel in 1994. This allows calculations directly in the mouse – without the need for software drivers and without having to rely on the user’s computer. All of the mouse’s advanced setting and user settings are calculated directly on the mouse, providing the user with a mouse movement that is completely free of any interpolation or extrapolation, without any delay, filtering and without using up memory or resources on the user’s computer. Just plug in the USB and you are set.

SteelSeries is having a sweepstakes that ends this week to win a VIP trip to BlizzCon. The Grand Prize winner will take home: 2 Tickets to BlizzCon, Airfare, Accommodations, $200 to spend, $200 to Morton’s Steakhouse, and front of the line access during the show. Since there can only be one GRAND Prize winner (and a seriously killer grand prize at that), Steelseries decided to give away $2500 of additional prizes from J!nx, Cryptozoic and Brady Games to others who take the time to enter – you can check out the full roster of prizes and enter at Steelseries.com. But hurry — the contest is only running until Friday, September 30th (US and Canada only).
