Here on Geekdad, we like to share with you all the geeky places we take our families to, be they Science Museums, Woodland adventures or even good old fashioned Theme parks, but there’s obviously so much to do that we couldn’t ever hope of mentioning even a fraction of them all – which is where a new website called NerdyDayTrips.com comes in.
It all started about a year ago when British Author, Journalist, and Bad Science
Inspired by this success, Ben and his cohorts decided to “take this one step further, and try to build a giant, inclusive, user-generated nerd map” and so a special Google map was set up and all the previously mentioned places added. Then they put another call out for more suggestions to be added directly to the map, tweeted with the hashag #nerdytrips or simply left as comments on Ben’s ‘secondary‘ blog and the number of places ballooned to nearly 400 by March.
There was a promise to “maybe … pull together a website at some stage in the near-ish future” and at the beginning of the September, NerdyDayTrips.com was launched, thanks to the help of web agency Applecado and designer Aaron Rudd and now features nearly 2000 places to visit from all over the world.
Searching the map is really easy as it works just like any normal Google map, and clicking the little pins give you a brief bit of info about that spot, including a photo and URL if the author was kind enough to add them. A search on my hometown of Shepperton brought up several intersting things nearby, including a statue of a Tripod from War of the Worlds near Horsell Common in Woking which I’m going to have to check out next time I’m in that area.
Adding a new spot is super simple too, all you have to do is sign in with your Twitter account (or just register), then either locate your place and drop a pin onto the map or just enter all the details manually. Hit return and the @NewNerdyTrips bot autotweets your new spot for the world to see.
There are big plans for the site in the future, including a nerdy route planner, places to stay near the spots and of course, mobile apps, but for now they need your input. So please head over to NerdyDayTrips.com and add your favourite geeky places to visit.
