I have to admit that it feels good to get back to my roots, yo — i.e. “foolproof” equations that supposedly solve things we’d like solved. With that in mind, here’s my take on parental IQ through the (not so) innocent eyes of a child. Because this is a puzzle of the week, not only do you have to enter your data and solve the equation above to discover your child’s estimation of your IQ, but please show your work, and please also look behind the numbers to list at least one piece of common sense logic that I used while building it. In other words, maybe describe what’s behind the G(A-18)(A-8) or what’s the purpose of having IQc on the top and bottom? I’ll accept the logic of H, $, or ER, but explaining those are pretty obvious and thus worth fewer style points.
Also, unlike most puzzles of the week, I left the commenting function on so that you can suggest important variables I might have missed or otherwise slag off this momentously accurate equation (wink wink, nudge nudge).
Here are the variables:
• IQY= Your actual IQ
• IQC= Your child’s (estimated) IQ
• H= Average waking hours per day you spend with said child.
• $= Dollars spent on recreational activities and/or toys for child in most recent 7 days
• ER= Number of trips to the emergency room for child-related injury or illness in past year.
• G= Child’s gender: if male, enter 1; if female, enter 2.
• A= If your child’s age is between 8 and 18, enter the age in years. If older or younger, enter 8 (or 18…)
