Possibly the only thing that could get my kids and me more excited than a new Studio Ghibli movie is a Studio Ghibli movie based on one of our favorite books.
So, yeah, this trailer for the upcoming U.K. release of Arrietty–a Studio Ghibli film based on Mary Norton’s classic children’s novel, The Borrowers–has us just a wee bit excited. The tale of tiny people who live inside the walls, surviving by means of “borrowed” buttons and spools and bits of food, seems like perfect material for the lush and magical animation wizardry of the studio that brought us My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Kiki’s Delivery Service.
The American dub will have voices by different actors, including Will Arnett, Carol Burnett, and Amy Poehler. Arrietty is slated to open in the U.S. and U.K. in February 2012. I really don’t know how I’m going to wait that long! We may have to immerse ourselves in a Borrowers read-aloud marathon to tide us over.
OMG OMG OMG OMG!! This trailer looks fantastic! I love the Borrowers and have ever since I was a small tyke. OOoooooh how exciting!
So I’m guessing you didn’t like this version?

I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. The trailer alone made me cringe.
I live in Japan, and I watched it on DVD last week. It was pretty good. Not as good as Totoro or Chihiro or Princess Mononoke though. If it had been made in the US I think there would have been sequels, but Ghibli doesn’t really do sequels. Maybe this time will be different.
