The GeekDad team would like to pause to commemorate the passing of husband, father and geek culture icon Roy Skelton. This English actor was known in his native land as the voice of both Zippy and George on the long-running children’s television series Rainbow, but will be forever remembered by geeks the world over as the man who helped voice Doctor Who villains the Krotons, the Cybermen and, most notably, the Daleks.

In 2006 the Economist declared “hiding behind the sofa whenever the Daleks appear” a veritable cultural institution for British youth, and Skelton, who first contributed his vocal talents to the series in 1967′s “The Evil of the Daleks,” was an undeniable part of this sci-fi legacy. Throughout his career he challenged Doctors two, three, four, six, and seven, forever cementing his place in the hallowed halls of television villainy.

Please join your fellow Whovians in remembering his contributions to the BBC’s storied tradition and to Skaro’s undeniable superiority.
