Practice Treating Ailments with Toca Doctor

Other Toca Boca apps I have reviewed, Helicopter Taxi and Toca Tea Party, turned your iDevice into a toy. Toca Doctor is more like a game, but a visually awesome and fun one. The whole app has a 50s retro feel to it, which really works.

Available in iPod Touch/iPhone and HD iPad versions, Toca Doctor is a game where kids treat ailments on a child patient’s body. It isn’t gruesome or very bloody, though. Everything from indigestion to head lice are turned into cute, cartoon-y games. And throughout, there is a little doctor who guides you in treating the patient.

Tap the doctor and he flies over to the patient’s body and identifies four or five different problem locations, symbolized by a red target. Tap on these and treat the ailments by playing different games like matching shapes, traversing mazes, lining things up, tapping the screen, dragging things around, and more.

When you are done treating an ailment, the target sign shown turns into a check mark. When you finish all the identified problems, tap the doctor again for him to identify four or five more. The ailment games are based on real medical topics such as setting bones, red and white blood cells, giving first aid to cuts and scrapes, indigestion, head lice, runny noses, splinters, organ placement, red eyes, healthy mouths, and healthy food.

Once you treat an ailment, you can always replay the minigame as many times as you like. When you finish treating all of the possible ailments, a doctor kit shows up on the table, where you get to then arrange doctor tools to fit inside.

I really enjoyed this game. Treating the ailments was a great deal of fun, and the look of the game is gorgeous. The activities use different tapping and dragging skills that are great for young kids, and older kids will just enjoy pretending to be doctors. Most of the app is in the portrait orientation, but a few of the activities and screens require you to turn the device for best viewing.

Toca Doctor is available in the iTunes store for $0.99 with Toca Doctor HD costing $1.99. It is a playful app that helps kids practice fine motor skills while getting oriented with body ailments, injuries, and other things.

Note: I received a copy of this app for review purposes.
