Have a Great Decoration Day!

Geek Culture Hacking the Holidays

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. That’s one important thing to take away when celebrating Memorial Day, which was originally termed “Decoration Day,” because people in communities in both the American North and South would decorate the graves of soldiers who fell in the Civil War. After World War II, the holiday grew to memorialize all fallen U.S. soldiers, but the roots of the holiday still lay in reconciliation and common consolation. So while you’re grilling in the back yard, finishing Portal 2, or watching the Indy 500 this weekend, just remember that while there are many visions about what America should be, there are even more people who fought and died to make sure we could argue about it. So take a moment, raise a glass, and remember them.
