To say that Daniel Solis, creator of the storytelling game Happy Birthday, Robot! and curator of the Thousand-Year Game Design Challenge, is prolific would be a drastic understatement. Honestly, I think Daniel has somehow managed to thwart the space-time continuum and gotten ahold of a few extra hours per day. That, or he just works his butt off. One of the two.
His latest project, Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple (rhymes with “go”), is a storytelling game about youngsters who travel the skies helping people and causing trouble. Like Happy Birthday, Robot!, this new game is a blur between Euro-style board games and RPGs, but Do is aimed at kids 12 and up.
“I was inspired by Nickelodeon’s Avatar: the Last Airbender, The Little Prince, and the Kino’s Journey anime series,” Solis says. “I combined those influences into a new storytelling game set in a weird new universe. I’m happy to say Do consistently produces a funny, creatively engaging and strategically interesting experience.”
The game is published by Evil Hat Productions, the company behind the awesome Dresden Files Role-Playing Game and the very clever A Penny for My Thoughts. Together, Daniel Solis and Evil Hat are running a fundraiser on Kickstarter, the crowdsource fundraising site that is making waves in the independent games and comics markets.
The goal was to raise $4,000 in 45 days, but that mark was met on Day 1. Phase 2, which introduced more cool bonuses with each tick of the rising tally, lasted for six hours before it was also exceeded. This means that the cost for producing Do is decreasing, and there are fun extra features that Daniel is working on for those who back the project.
