Robot Season: Battle by the Beach

Places

We’re heading down to Galveston, Texas, with the robot this weekend for Austin Middle School’s Battle by the Beach VEX Robotics competition.

Since qualifying for the World Championships at UT Dallas, we have been busy with two different robot designs. The forklift design turned out to be too heavy and difficult to drive so we settled on a simple drive-train and four-bar lift arm. In addition to the arm, we added an extension and hook for hanging off the ladder. See the video below for one of the first successful hangs. Since then the process and winch have been modified to hang in about 20 seconds. We’ll need to shave another 5-10 seconds of that for Worlds, but this should do for now.

If you’re in the area, stop by and see how excited these kids can get over science and robots!
