Angry Birds Rio Seeks to Addict You Ahead of the Movie — With iTunes Card Giveaway!

Angry Birds RioAngry Birds RioLike virtually every other human being with a smartphone, I love playing Angry Birds. So of course there wasn’t any doubt that I would get Angry Birds Rio this morning when it came out. I’ve only just started playing it, but, while a departure from the original and the Holiday games, it’s still basically the same idea with a different conceit.

See, the movie Rio, for which the game is meant to whet your appetite, involves birds getting kidnapped. So in Angry Birds Rio, instead of trying to kill green pigs for stealing the birds’ eggs, the angry birds are trying to rescue caged birds (who can fly without a slingshot, incidentally) by breaking open the cages in pretty much exactly the same way they kill pigs. There are some new things (boxes, for example) that serve as parts of the levels, but at its core it’s still the same Angry Birds you know and love. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

The movie Rio doesn’t come out until April 15, but in the U.S. the game is available today on iTunes for iOS devices and in the Amazon Appstore for Android devices. We don’t have any download codes to give out, but we have something better — two $15 iTunes gift cards, courtesy of the folks at Fox (which made the movie). Since the game is only $0.99 on iTunes, and free on Amazon, this seems like a clear win. To enter, you must live in the U.S. or Canada, and leave a comment on this article telling us which bird is your favorite ammunition in Angry Birds, and why, at or before 11:59pm EDT tomorrow, Wednesday, March 23. Two commenters will be chosen at random to receive a $15 iTunes gift card that they can use to purchase anything available via iTunes, even if it’s unrelated to Angry Birds.

Angry Birds Rio launches today with 60 dedicated levels, with more to be added later (as usual for Angry Birds) via free app updates.
