“I’m sure that in 1985, plutonium is available in every corner drugstore, but in 1955, it’s a little hard to come by.”

Uranium, on the other hand:

During a visit to San Francisco, David Morgan-Mar, creator of Darths and Droids and Irregular Webcomic! snapped this picture of the Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab at the Burlingame Museum of PEZ Memorabilia.

The Oak Ridge Associated Universities web site has a great page detailing the contents of this kit, which dates to 1951 and included four types of uranium ore, a geiger counter, a cloud chamber and a government manual on prospecting for uranium. And now, of course, I desperately want a poster of that “Learn How Dagwood Splits the Atom!” book cover.

David regularly posts impressive – and extremely varied – work to his Flickr photo stream.
