Shameless Pitch: DoD’s Armed With Science Blog

As GeekMom’s token military member, I thought I’d share one of my favorite blogs! It’s okay, you’re allowed to use this one, it isn’t classified or anything.

Armed With Science, the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) science and technology blog was started in January 2009 as part of the Department of Defense’s Defense Media Activity goal to connect better with servicemembers and the taxpaying public via emerging social media. Each of the armed services (in other words, the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force and US Marine Corps) has been establishing policies on the allowances and restrictions servicemembers will have for using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and blogging. Policymakers want servicemembers to be able to connect with other military members, their families and the general public…but it needs to be done without compromising national security. In fact, just last week the U.S. Army sent handbooks out to their troops, clarifying their position.
