GeekDad Tron Week, images from Disney
It’s really, almost, very nearly here! On the 17th December TRON: Legacy finally comes to a cinema screen near you and to celebrate the end of what seems like a VERY long wait (28 years?), we’ve decided to have a special Tron week here on GeekDad. We’re planning to offer up lots of lovely Tron-based posts including reviews of Daft Punk’s awesome soundtrack
Our own Dave Banks got hold of a copy of The Art of Tron: Legacy hardback book from Disney a while ago and here’s what he thought about it.
Underwire has a great post on two designers who have built a Tron-themed suite at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. They’ve carved the furniture from great chunks of ice and back lit them all with neon and LEDs. Cool…
Last week at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank there was a huge ‘projection mapping’ experience, featuring specially made visuals, movie sound FX and that awesome Daft Punk soundtrack. It was created by the Guided Collective in collaboration with Flat-e & Seeper and used 6, 18k projectors, projecting onto canvases approxrimately 50m wide by 20m tall, with audio from an 8k D&B sound rig. Keeping in the retro vibe for a moment, Eurogamer has a nice retrospective of the 2003 videogame, TRON 2.0, noting the similarities between it and the upcoming Legacy. What a shame they pinched the best name for the movie sequel!

I’ve just re-watched the original in preparation for Legacy and I spotted a fantastic easter egg that I’ve never noticed before. About 40 minutes in, Sark is bossing his underlings around, standing near a big screen. On this screen you can clearly see Pac-man frantically gobbling away and you can even hear the famous wocka-wocka-wocka in the background! I thought I was imagining it, but a quick google came up with this post from Den Of Geek, complete with a clip and screen cap, plus another easter egg that I didn’t manage to spot even after reading their post. They’ve also got plenty of other Tron related post, including many interviews with the director and crew.
Some lucky people in the press have already seen the movie and so there are a few reviews out there now from the likes of Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing, Wired.co.uk, Ain’t It Cool, Time Out, IGN, and Slashfilm to name a few.
Personally, I’m trying to avoid them for now, which is easier said than done! My tickets are booked, roll on the 17th!
