Ring In the New Year With Dark Horse Comics

Ready for the new year? Here are a few bits of news from Dark Horse Comics to help you start off the new year right!

First up: Axe Cop! Everyone’s favorite axe-wielding, shades-wearing public servant has made the jump from web comic to print. Axe Cop appeared on the scene early in 2010 to the delight and bafflement of many (read GeekDad Dave Banks’ take on it here). The Nicolle brothers signed on with Dark Horse, which published a collection of the online material earlier this month. Axe Cop Volume One retails for $14.99 and is available now.

Arriving in March is the print-only, in-color story “Bad Guy Earth” (the cover is above). Here’s a plot synopsis:

If there’s one thing police don’t like, it’s a guy with an axe who’s better than they are at catching and dispatching bad guys! Now Axe Cop and his partner Dinosaur Soldier are being treated like bad guys, not only by the police, but by the President and the Army, too! But when a pair of psychic brothers barge in from Outer Space and turn the Army into bad guys, who gets the call to set things right? Axe Cop!

Also, Dark Horse announced their Digital Comics Program, which launches in January. For those of you with iDevices, you’ll be able to get the app from the iTunes store. But even if you’re not an Apple fanboy, you’ll be able to hit digital.darkhorse.com and read comics on your computer as well. A long list of the comics available in January can be found here.

Finally, here’s my favorite bit of news: Concrete is back!

I really like Concrete — Paul Chadwick is both a fantastic artist and a great writer, and his stories never fail to grab my imagination. But there haven’t been any new stories for a while. In 2011, Dark Horse is bringing back its anthology comic Dark Horse Presents, and the first issue will have a Concrete story (and a sneak peek at Frank Miller’s Xerxes). There’s not a lot of info available about it yet, but here’s one thing to look forward to in the coming year.
