Spoiler alert: Anyone who has not read all of the Harry Potter books and cares about the ending, stop reading now.
There is a giant hippogriff in the room, so I am just going to come out and say it: Harry and Hermione should have been a couple. Throughout the entire series I just assumed they would end up together, as they seemed to complement each other so well.
So, since it’s of Harry Potter week here at GeekMom, I thought I would share with you my top reasons Harry and Hermione should have been an item:
- Both are intelligent and excel at most subjects. Sure Harry blew off history of magic, but come on, it was taught by a boring ghost!
- They are supportive of each other. Hermione is always there for Harry, even when Ron is off pouting somewhere because he isn’t popular. In the final books, Ron even deserts both of them and Harry and Hermione must stick together to survive. Hermione is clearly willing to do all she can to help Harry defeat Voldemort.
- They are sensitive to each others’ feelings. Hermione knows how hurt and angry Harry is at Dumbledore in the last books, and Harry understands how Hermione feels when Ron is so cruel to her.
- Both of them are compassionate, sometimes to a fault. Hermione championed house elves, while Harry was always going out of his way to help people, like rescuing Fleur’s sister Gabrielle.
- They are both from the Muggle world, even though Harry’s parents are wizards. They both are discovering their magical skills and the Wizarding world at the same time.
- They are best friends and for a relationship to really last, that is a good start.
- Ron: where to begin? Throughout the series he is selfish, jealous, cruel, and rude. He treats Hermione poorly and uses her to get his homework done. He says unkind things about her interests and her abilities in school. He is insanely jealous of Viktor Krum and goes out of his way to be a jerk. He is not even close to Hermione intellectually. He is mostly interested in quidditch, copying homework, and being mean to people. I honestly don’t think a woman of her intellect and talents would put up with how Ron treats her, though I know some women are gluttons for punishment.
What say you, fellow HP fans? Did JK Rowling get it right? Or should Harry and Hermione have ended up with the happily ever after?
First, it was necessary for both Hermione and Harry to become part of the Weasley family. Most people grow apart from their high school friends (until they reconnect on Facebook). Since there is no Facebook in the HP world, the readers/viewers needed some other guarantee that the H,H,R trio would remain close. By making them all family, we can feel secure that their relationships will not die. For this reason, I think the STORY required Harry and Hermione to both marry into the Weasley family. If Harry and Hermione got together, Ron would have been on the outs and the trio would become a couple. Ron would be marginalized.
Now, I also think that Harry and Ginny are a good match. I think Ginny’s character is pretty well developed – she’s tough, a fighter. And you can’t forget chemistry – obviously Harry and Ginny are into each other.
Hermione and Ron are harder to imagine, but you know the saying, “opposites attract.” If I can divorce my mind from the image of the actual performers playing those parts, it is not that hard to see how Hermione’s and Ron’s constant jabs at each other are actually representative of an underlying attraction.
So, the story required it and the characters allowed it.

I liked the final pairings. I am basing this on the books, not the movie (though I think it still stands), as well as a few things that JK Rowling said about the characters.
Where romance is concerned, and these books are not about romance, I think that a lot of what Rowling is trying to say is that not possible heterosexual pairing is a potential couple. Harry and Hermione do not have feelings for one another. I mean, how many of us have had friends date someone and we think to ourselves “why him/her?” or see two friends who are just friends and think “why not them?” and the truth is, it’s just not there. They just don’t feel that way. And I think for Harry and Hermione, it just wasn’t there.
Ginny, was like Harry’s mom. She’s a good person, cute, brave and very smart. Also, she’s a very talented witch. The bat boogey hex was an example of this, it wasn’t meant to be her only skill – think of the DA spells etc. Ginny was one of my favourite characters and I loved that Harry finally saw how great she was as matured into the brave and independent young woman she eventually became. And as for Hermione, could Harry possibly betray his best friend that way? The first person who showed him kindness.
A few people have mentioned the high school pairings as a problem, and normally this is something that bothers me in young adult literature. Still, I think that in the wizarding world, it makes sense. We’re talking about a population so small that they have one boarding school in Britain for all the children. Really, even if you broke up after high school, you’d keep running into one another. Also, it’s obviously common (look at the older couples), and in the case of Harry, Ron and Hermione, it would make some sense that they would wind up with someone who had been there while they were going through everything. Someone who was a link to the past and could understand the impacts of this going forward, and in Harry’s case could permanently and officially link him to the family he always wanted, the Weasleys.
To me, the pairings not only made sense, but were the only way to both logically and emotionally bring the characters’ stories to a close.

They seem to play up that relationship. Especially, I thought, in this last movie. The dancing in the tent?! Really?! She was with him at his parents graves.
I wish Jenny has bee more developed as a character and maybe I would feed differently.

Harry notices how pretty she is at the Yule Ball, espcially when she smiles. In “Half Blood Prince,” Hermione tells Harry he has never been more fanciable. He doesn’t take the hint; at least I thought it was a hint.
Harry’s brief romance with Ginny in “Half Blood Prince” was sweet, but he never says he loves her.

Though I respect JK. Rowling paired Ron and Hermione. I think that anyone could have ended up with anybody. I would have liked to see a twist like hermione and Draco. But Hermione and Ron fit the bill to me. Re- reading and re- watching the movies made me relalize that.
Though i am not a Harry and Ginny shipper. And would have liked Harry end up with someone else, I respect those who do ship them. Maybe because I never had a attachment with Ginny as I do with other characters, I didn’t learn much about her.
