Solve the Mystery of the Salem Witch Trials with Your iPad

Midnight Mysteries: Salem Witch Trials iPad app

In the spooky new iPad app, Midnight Mysteries: Salem Witch Trials, the ghost of Nathaniel Hawthorne comes to you for help. There were mysterious circumstances surrounding his death, and as you investigate you’ll find yourself caught up in stories of land grabs, betrayal, and, of course, accused witches. (MumboJumbo provided a review copy of the app, and they have a copy to give to you, too. Keep reading for details.)

To solve the mystery, you must talk to the ghosts you encounter. They’ll send you on missions to get something they need, and then share information with you. Objects can be found in the environment, or at the end of one of these hidden object hunts. Find all of the objects at the bottom to be able to search for the one you need for your mission. The gameplay here is similar to I Spy, which is to say fun and sometimes maddening. Some of the screens are very dark, making the objects tough to find. You can collect ravens, though, which will give you hints.

Find all of the objects on the screen.

The game is also filled with a wide range of terrific puzzles. One of my favorite ones was the puzzle where you have to use broken mirror shards and colored jars to move and change light, moving the ghost through the room.

One of the many great puzzles.

The other thing to note about Midnight Mysteries: Salem Witch Trials is that it’s stunning. The scenery looks amazing, and the ghost effects range from wonderfully spooky to downright scary.

The gorgeous snowy graveyard scene.

This game is recommended for ages 9 and up, but some of the younger kids in this range may still find parts of it too scary. The story is also very complex. I’ll admit that I didn’t totally follow all of it, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the game. ($9.99 for the iPad app, also available as a PC Game)
