Munchkin Zombies, scheduled for release in April 2011, will be the first full Munchkin game in almost three years. GeekDad contributing cartoonist John Kovalic is the man behind the Munchkin art yet again, so Steve Jackson Games has very graciously agreed to give GeekDad’s readers an exclusive sneak first peek at some of the new cards of the set.

Munchkin creator and game design legend Steve Jackson chose the cards, and both he and John will be giving us a few of their insights on a daily basis this week. So be sure to come back to GeekDad every day for a new card from Munchkin Zombies, and new thoughts from Steve and John. And now for today’s card, which requires a departure from GeekDad’s usual policy of avoiding toilet humor:

Steve Jackson, Designer – One of the running jokes in this Munchkin set is that the zombies, being mindless, don’t deliberately put on armor. So the armor, and the footgear, and the headgear, and some of the weapons are just things that the zombie might have blundered into. Silly things. Here, for instance, was a great chance to let John draw a toilet!

John Kovalic, Artist – What some folks might not expect with this set is that the Munchkins ARE the zombies, so my main goal was to make the protagonists hideous post-zombipocalypse monstrosities, yet at the same time iconic, fun and somewhat lovable. In the process, I ended up drawing some of the most disgusting things I’ve ever tackled. THANKS, STEVE JACKSON GAMES!

I forget what the first toilet I drew for Munchkin was — if I had to guess, I’d say it was the fourth or fifth supplement. But it’s become a running (no pun intended) sight gag in the games, up there with Ducks and Chickens. I’ve drawn nearly 3,000 different Munchkin cards for the various core sets and supplements, but in the back of my mind, I worry somewhat that I’ll be mostly remembered for the ducks and toilets. THANKS AGAIN, STEVE JACKSON GAMES!

On the plus side, I love the fact that the seat itself, hanging down as it does, provides absolutely no protection to the zombie’s — shall we say — nether-regions …
