GeekDad Puzzle Of The Week Solution: But What About The Liner Notes?

Geek Culture

Congratulations to Ben Shuman, whose correct answer was chosen as this week’s winner of a $50 gift certificate from those headbangers over at ThinkGeek. And to the rest of you GeekDad groupies, you can get $10 off any purchase of $40 or more by using the code: GEEKDAD65RW

Puzzle:

In my mind, one of the biggest downsides of the CD (and digital music, for that matter) is the minimization of album art. Yes, it’s still there, but in far smaller form. By way of dating myself, I can recall spending hours listening to albums (of the vinyl variety) with headphones on, lying on the living room floor. Music was my escape as a teenage kid. Tracing the embossed covers with my fingertips and staring at the huge 12 1/2″ art, I spent hour after hour staring at the elaborate designs of bands who I could only imagine (these are the pre-Internet days, mind you).

So, for this week’s puzzle, let’s pay homage to some album art. Hidden within the album titles of the eight albums above (click to embiggen!) is a wonderfully geeky saying. Your task is to identify the saying, each band, album title and what your favorite album cover of all time is (I’m just curious about the last part) to qualify for this week’s puzzle.

Solution:

  • Danny Elfman – So Lo
  • Fat Boy Slim – You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby
  • Foo Fighters – The Colour And The Shape
  • ApSci – Thanks for Asking
  • Guns N Roses – Appetite For Destruction
  • The Psychedelic Furs – All of This & Nothing
  • Thievery Corporation – The Outernational Sound
  • Fishbone – Fishbone

So Long And Thanks For All The Fish!

And thanks to everyone who submitted an answer this week. For those of you scoring at home, the most popular album cover among contest submitters was (no surprise) Sgt Pepper’s, followed closely by various progrock bands. Me? My favorite, like a few of you, is London Calling.

Be sure to check back on Monday when puzzle band frontman, Dave Giancaspro, will burst your eardrums and split your skull with his mighty viking wail (and a new puzzle).
